Runners and Walkers Welcome—Half Marathon Program Offered

If you’ve always wanted to become a runner or need a good excuse to take up fitness walking, now’s your chance! Riverland Hills is offering a 12-week program that combines a weekly Bible study with group training sessions to prepare you to run a 5k (3.1 mile), an 10k (6.2 mile), or a half marathon (13.1) road race. Walkers will train to walk a 5k event.

The 30-minute Bible study meets at RHBC on Sundays at 6 p.m., followed by a group run. 30-minute running/fitness instruction classes meet Tuesdays at 6 p.m., followed by a group run. The group meets on Thursdays at 6 p.m. for an additional group run. Participants do not have to attend all training sessions, but are encouraged to complete at least three weekly workouts.



The 5k and 10k program is targeted to beginners—absolutely no experience is required. Adults and children 7th grade and above are invited to participate. (Youth must attend with a participating adult.)

Half marathon participants should be able to complete a distance of seven to eight miles before beginning the program.


Run your First 5k, 10k, or half marathon!
• 5k and 10k participants will complete the Empower Run in the Quail Valley neighborhood of Columbia on Saturday, May 9.
•  Half marathon participants will complete the Palmetto Half Marathon event on Saturday, April 11.

5K Program for Walkers

• Designed for new and experienced walkers, this 12-week program is held at the same time as the Run for God program. Participants gradually increase their mileage slowly in order to prepare to walk a 5k (3.1 mile) event.

Half Marathon Program
• This program is designed for experienced runners who are already running three to four times a week and can complete a long run of seven to eight miles. To help participants who need a head start on their training, we provide a training schedule that begins in January before the class officially begins. Participants will meet at the church with the 10k group on Sundays. They will meet and run separately on Tuesdays at Irmo Town Park at 6 p.m., on Thursday nights at 6 p.m. at Riverfront Park, and on Saturday mornings at 8 a.m. at the Irmo side of Lake Murray Dam. Participants do not have to attend all training sessions, but are encouraged to complete at least three weekly workouts. This group will train to complete the Palmetto Half Marathon on Saturday, April 11.

  • The Spring 2015 programs begins Sunday, February 15 and runs through Saturday, May 9.

  • Eligibility: Adults and youth 7th grade and older (Youth must attend with an adult who is participating).
  • Registration fees (deadline is Sunday, February 8, 2015): 
  • 5k/10k:  $75 for each participant (Includes workbook, Run for God shirt and entry fee for local 5k or 10k race)
  • 5k and 10k Alumni:  $35 for each participant (includes Run for God shirt and entry fee for local 5k or 10k race). Optional Run for God shirt is $20 each.
  • Half marathon:  $65 for each participant (includes entry fee for local half marathon). Optional book or Run for God shirt or Run for God book is $20 each.

Run with us all year long!

We have informal walking and running groups that continue meeting during the "off" season:

Tuesday evenings - Irmo Town Park @ 6:00 p.m.
Thursday evenings - Columbia Riverfront Park @ 6:00 p.m.
Saturday mornings - Lake Murray Dam (Irmo side) @ 7:00 a.m.

There is no charge for joining these groups. It's just an informal gathering of walking/running friends.
